I have lived on a remote hill farm in the epicentre
of Exmoor National Park for fifteen years and still find the Exmoor views more
satifying and colourful, whatever the season, than any other landscape I can
remember - Sir Ranulph Fiennes Bt,
OBE
The South West of England is beautiful in any season. Gentle
hills, coombes and moorland make up the landscape. The countryside is a lush
green and gives the impression of being soft and velvety. The hills roll
towards clifftops and picturesque bays. The rugged coastline gives way to many
hidden coves which were ideal for the occasional smuggler !
Amongst the hills and valleys narrow winding roads pass over ancient
bridges and through fords into pretty villages. These have quaint cottages,
some have roofs of thatch, and interesting old churches and churchyards. The
moorland can be very atmospheric and the heather and gorse bring a mass of
colour over a vast area. Wild ponies and red deer inhabit the moors; and the
timid deer can often be seen grazing very early in the morning.
